A Duppy Guide To The Jamaican Mule
The Jamaican Mule is one of the most infamous and tastiest rum cocktails around. It's not only super easy to make, but also packed full of all the right flavours that work in perfect harmony together. We'll be giving you the low down on all things Jamaican Mule, as well as hooking you up with a banging Duppy recipe that you can whip up this weekend with friends and family.
The History of the Mule:
The Jamaican Mule is a more contemporary variant of the classic Moscow Mule, that was created in 1941 by John Martin, as Vodka was becoming extremely popular in cosmopolitan areas of the US, like Los Angeles and New York. The Jamaican Mule uses the same basic ingredients as it's European centric counter part, but swaps out the Vodka for some delish Jamaican rum instead - we think it's a big improvement!
A Brief Overview of the Moscow Mule:
John Martin was a sale man who obtained the rights to Smirnoff vodka in 1939, but initially struggled to get the American market on board with the spirit, as consumers were favouring gin and whiskey at the time. Whilst in LA, he stopped by the Cock ’n’ Bull, a famous bar owned by Jack Morgan, who incidentally had a cellar full of unsold ginger beer. One of the bartenders there, Wes Price, was the brains behind creating a refreshing cocktail that combined these two ingredients, adding lime juice, and serving over ice; et voile, The Moscow Mule was born.
But it wouldn't be a classic Moscow Mule without the awesome serve ware. Sophie Berezinski, a Russian lady who recently inherited a copper factory, came up with the amazing idea of serving the cocktail in her signature Russian mug.
John Martin then travelled around America, using his camera to take photos of bartenders posing with the iconic copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff. He showed these pictures to other bartenders to show them what their competition was up to, in order to incentivise them to sell the product. And that's how the Moscow Mule gained it's cult status!
The Jamaican Mule, however, uses delicious Caribbean Rum for an epic twist on the classic cocktail and is therefore hailed for it’s warm, fiery tones. Check out our banging recipe below to get in on the action!
